Chapter Thirteen
For a few days, Simeon held out hope that he might be able to find Orsini well before either of them reached Paris. But he had to guess at the route: north to Zurich or west to Geneva?
Orsini had mentioned making arrangements for his family in Zurich. So, Simeon started there.
Whether he guessed wrong, or Orsiniâs good fortune kept him hidden, there was no sign of him in the passes through the mountains, and the coach drivers said they couldnât recall any particular skinny Italian with a black beard.
In Zurich, he stopped for two weeks, asking around at working menâs bars, but found nothing. He found where Orsiniâs children were living and watched them from rooftops. Watched Orsiniâs brother and his wife with the children. Watched their governess. But there was never any sign of Orsini, or that they were hiding anyone. He nearly dropped to the ground to question them, several times, but always changed his mind. Simeon had made many mistakes in his life; he wasnât going to add frightening children to the mix. He had no idea what they knew about their father, or didnât know.
Heâd failed to pick up Orsiniâs trail, but maybe heâd find him at his destination. There was a rail line from Basel to Strasbourg, and from Strasbourg to Paris.
Simeon had never traveled by rail before. He found it stifling, like being in the hold of a ship, with the steam and the noise and the rocking. He was glad when the journey ended. The Gare de lâEst in Paris reminded him of a cathedral, with its long nave rising to a curved glass ceiling, its stone arcades, and its half-rose window and statues over the entrance.
He walked out into a wide, bustling courtyard full of carriages, horses stamping, people walking in all directions. The sky was a deep blue, punctuated by clouds that looked like their paint was still wet. All in all, he felt exposed, and the impossibility of his task made him reel. Heâd been failing Ada for a long time â not to mention the dogged Mademoiselle Arnaud â and heâd made some kind of peace with that, convinced himself it was all a dying womanâs imaginings. And maybe some of it was, but all of a sudden the Magus seemed to be all too real.
He had to get his bearings. The Gare de lâEst was only a few stories high, but it would be enough to get him up and out of his bustle. A place to think and get the lie of the land. He slipped around to the side of the building, waited for a moment when there was no one near and looking his way, then pulled himself up by the masonry around the windows. Up to the very top of the roof, from where he stood looking out over a stone railing at the sea of buildings, all the walls the color of cream, topped with silver roofs, and dotted here and there with flower boxes.
